Key functions and responsibilities of the Department of Fisheries, Punjab.

Punjab has extensive fisheries resources with great potential. Major natural resources include rivers, canals, reservoirs, lakes, and waterlogged areas covering approximately 3 million hectares (7.5 million acres). In addition to the sustainable use of natural resources, private sector fish farming activities have increased significantly over the past two decades. Currently, fish farming is being carried out on approximately 61,000 acres and more than 65% of fish is coming from private fish farms.

The Department of Fisheries performs the following functions:

Extension

The Department provides the following extension services to potential and progressive fish farmers:

Free technical advisory services
Free soil and water analysis
Provision of bulldozers at subsidized rates
Subsidized supply of quality fish seed
Facilities for diagnosis and analysis of fish diseases
Capacity building through short training courses and field workshops
Online information on fisheries website, Facebook page and YouTube channel

Protection

Protection of this industry is ensured through the following measures:

Restrictions on net size and fish size
Enforcement of closed fishing season (1st June to 31st August)
Protection against electric fishing
Conservation of biodiversity

Management

The organization ensures protection of secured rights of government and public to promote successful fish farming in the country:

Prohibition of fishing without license
Leasing of fishing rights of public waters
Restocking of fish in public waters
Conservation of fish species
Promotion of sport fishing
