Cage Culture

Cage culture is a modern fish farming technique where fish are raised in net cages. This method is being used in various parts of the world and can achieve higher production. Fish are fed artificial feed, and when they reach marketable size, they are harvested. However, issues related to this system include water quality, theft, and diseases.

Pakistan has made progress in this sector by successfully raising Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) imported from Thailand in small dams in Punjab, such as Dhorabi and Dhok Taliyan (Chakwal district), achieving encouraging results. Punjab is rich in natural water resources, with approximately 55 small dams and 900 mini dams, with an average water surface area of 5 acres.
